Tips from WSPS Consultants

  • Remember that simply delivering policies or programs won’t act as a culture driver on its own. Focus first on enabling desired behaviours from all employees and leaders.
  • If you haven’t already, take a look at the 13+ Workplace Factors Toolkits. The Workplace Factors provide opportunities for organizations to promote mental health and prevent mental harm by shaping a strong workplace culture. They also support sustainability, productivity and efficiency. Remember to assess and address them regularly to ensure effectiveness and continual improvement.
  • Organizational values that are integral to a psychologically healthy workplace strategy include: strong organizational commitment and leadership, active employee engagement and participation, and supportive and effective policies and procedures.
  • Two important principles that can have a direct impact on organizational culture are confidentiality and diversity. Clear communication on how to protect these principles will help strengthen employees’ willingness to actively participate in the workplace. This is a crucial element of a well-functioning organizational culture.

Potential Action Items

Be Inclusive

Don’t assume all employees are having the same experience. Seek to understand employees’ perceptions around inclusion through pulse checks, focus groups and listening tours. Take the learnings from employees to close gaps and remove barriers.

Monitor for Incivility

Rudeness, the degree it happens and is allowed, can predict the level of risk of workplace violations. Talk about and track acts of incivility (using methods that protect identity) to help keep the culture focused on behavioural conduct.

Acknowledge Teamwork

Cultures that work together are more likely to care for each other. Encourage a culture that promotes and acknowledges teamwork through words and appreciation. A thank you can go a long way when it is authentic.
