  • When identifying training topics for your leaders, consider the following: peer coaching, communication skills, emotional intelligence, inclusion and diversity, resilience and self-care, supportive performance management, conflict resolution and crisis management, accommodation and return to work.
  • Remember that key behaviours of a psychologically safe leader can include: communicating respectfully, creating an inclusive environment where people can express their opinions, remaining calm under pressure, acting with authenticity, stepping up during difficult times, developing and maintaining trust, listening without judgment, getting to know team members and building strong working relationships.
  • Create a leadership philosophy that defines behavioural expectations for all leaders.
  • Incorporate psychological safe leadership competencies into leader selection processes.

Train Leaders in the Basics

Ensure all leaders have basic training to understand the difference between mental health and mental illness, their role in building resilience, their duty to inquire and how to support employees during sensitive conversations.

Determine Leadership Support Opportunities

Determine what kind of support leaders need to become psychologically safe leaders, such as training, coaching and/or mentoring.

Evaluate the Effectiveness of Leaders

Providing leaders with feedback on how psychologically safe they are is a useful way for them to uncover blind spots. Help leaders develop action plans to close any gaps, and celebrate success.
